With the launch of a progressive approach to newspaper insert advertising, newspapers Ad Directors finally have a new method of generating new revenue streams from existing customers. Clip of Funny News Video

There are some clips of funny news videos where you feel like you shouldn't laugh but can't help yourself. The "Compilation of Reporters Getting Owned" is one of those videos. It gives me a whole new level of appreciation for what some of the reporters that bring the daily news have to go through. Sometimes, the people around them provide an unpleasant or unexpected twist. Some of the journalists are just in the wrong place in the wrong time. Others are victims of their own sense of adventure, suffering mishap when they try something they obviously haven't attempted before.

A few of the events in the video have you wincing, hoping the reporters were all right. An angry wrestler smacks a reporter in one scene; a rowdy passerby tackles the newsman out of the blue in another. An aspiring comedian presses a pie into the face of one female reporter, prompting her to taunt the crowd while trying to identify her unknown assailant.

A reporter covering a horse racing event fails to see the horse and rider appear behind him out of a cloud of dust; they run into him and all of them fall down. Likewise, a man reporting on some snow sledders misjudges their route and one of the sledders collides with him, causing him to do an impromptu flip. A reporter on the side of the road in a snowstorm, ahead of a snowplow, is bowled over by a wave of snow as the snowplow clears the street. One reporter holding an unhappy cat in her arms for a short news segment, is the victim of a the cat's displeasure as it swipes its claws towards her face and jumps down.

Newspaper Article - Tips For Writing a Newspaper Article

Below are some useful and effective tips to use when writing a newspaper article:

1. Get straight to the point. There is no room for fillers or beating around the bush when writing newspaper articles. As your audience are usually pressed for time and as your publishers would want to save as much space as possible, you need to make your articles short and concise.

2. Make it informative. Missing just a single important data is unforgivable when writing articles for newspapers. As such, it's very important that you list down all the information that you have gathered and make sure that you include them in your content.

3. Keep it short. Look at the information that you have in hand. Are they all needed by your readers? If not, you don't have any reason to include them on your articles. To save space, ensure that you only deliver those data that your readers will find interesting or useful to their lives.

4. Use quotes. Quotes can make your articles not only credible but interesting as well. Interview key people that are involved in the story that you are writing about and get their views or opinions. Insert the quotes without revising them.

5. Verify your data. It's unacceptable to submit your articles to your editors without verifying the data that you have included in your content. You don't want libel suit and you don't want to ruin your credibility, right? So, make time to verify every piece of information you write about and ensure that they are all based on facts.

Kitchen Appliance News

Recent bad news from the US includes the news that Whirlpool corporation are to close its manufacturing facilities in LaVergne, TN, U.S. and Reynosa, Mexico.

Production of built-in refrigerators currently manufactured at the LaVergne facility will be moved to the company's Fort Smith, AR facility, and production of side-by-side refrigerators made at Reynosa will shift to Whirlpool's Ramos Arizpe, Mexico site. At LaVergne, approximately 500 jobs will be eliminated, while at Reynosa, an estimated 750 jobs will be affected. The Fort Smith plant expects to add approximately 275 jobs by December, and the Ramos Arizpe facility plans to add an estimated 600 employees by mid-year.

Like wise in the UK, The Electrolux Group has announced that it is to close its loss-making cooker factory in Spennymoor towards the end of next year and consolidate production into an existing cooker plant in Poland. The Spennymoor factory manufactures AEG, Electrolux, and Zanussi cooking appliances - mainly free standing cookers - plus a smaller number of built-in ovens, for the UK and Irish markets and has approximately 500 employees.

"This development, in combination with a shift in consumer preferences from free-standing cookers to built-in cookers, has eroded the competitiveness of our Spennymoor factory. Running a loss-making factory is not sustainable which is why we have decided to consolidate our UK cooker manufacturing into our factory in Swidnica in Poland." said Magnus Yngen, head of Electrolux Major Appliances Europe.

The closure of the Electrolux cooking appliance factory at Spennymoor means that cooker production in Britain will be limited to range cooker production plus a handful of niche built-in manufacturers. This is seen by many in the industry as an inevitable outcome due to the lower production costs from producing appliances in the far east.

Do People Still Read the Newspaper - Whether Newspaper Advertising Is Still Effective

With the rise of the Internet comes a decline in almost all in print publications. Not many years ago I could go to the book store and pick out several short story magazines at my leisure to read. Now, if I want good fiction I'm more inclined to look up an online magazine than one in print. Simply finding a hard copy of a magazine these days can be a challenge. So what does this mean for newspapers?

Finding news online is an easy task. I routinely look up Yahoo news to get up to date information as well as reading the newspaper. The Internet provides a convenient way for people to easily acquire information at any time, so why not focus more on online news than in print?

Perhaps twenty or more years down the line this will be even truer, but to throw in the towel for our friend the tangible newspaper would be rather silly. While it may seem like everyone in this country has ready access to the Internet, there are still many who either don't, or choose not to. Furthermore, the Internet is something people can't always carry along with them. While wireless has given Internet access to a greater range of places, it still can't possibly compete with the versatility of a newspaper.

But what does all of this mean to marketing? Many companies are going to be tempted to shift more of their attention to online advertising than in print, but this would be a mistake. Color printing is not a thing of the past. People still like to have something they can hold in their hands, and, more importantly, something they can carry with them.

When you see that banner over a website, you have interest, and you think you'd like to try that out, what can you do? Go right at that moment to learn more? What if you don't have time? Write the information down or print it out, perhaps? But what a hassle that can be having to write everything down. A colorfully printed ad in a newspaper can be torn out, placed in your pocket, and carried with you. That right there is a convenience the Internet cannot readily give a person.

But beyond the convenience, newspapers are still a staple of our society, as are newspaper advertisements. Many people use these kinds of ads to see when the next sale is coming out, perhaps only looking through the newspaper at all to find this information. People know it's there, and unlike the Internet, which is a massive network of various websites, a newspaper is straightforward and easy to find. A person doesn't need to do lengthy searches to learn what they want to.

There has been a switch into Internet advertising, and it does have its advantages, but to say color printing and newspaper advertising is a dead form of marketing would be disregarding a large part of our population. We'll see what enough years do to newspapers, but for now, it seems a little too early to think about putting this particular media in the ground.

Newspaper Article Writing - How to Write Newspaper Articles

Writing a newspaper article can get relatively easy if you can just picture a triangle in your mind. This simply means, you need to use the inverted pyramid technique at all time.

Here's how you can easily write newspaper articles:

1. Headline. This is where you tell your target readers what your article is all about. In here, you should be able to capture the attention of your readers while you tell them what's in it for them. It must be short, punchy, and it must be very descriptive.

2. Byline. This tells the readers who wrote the story.

3. First paragraph. This is often called lead paragraph in newspaper article writing. This must contain all the why, how, where, when, who, and what elements of your story. It's important that your readers understand your article by simply reading your first paragraph. This is because research and studies show that a huge percentage of people reading newspapers do not read articles in their entirety.

4. Offer further explanations. In your succeeding paragraphs, you will need to give your readers supporting details that will help them better understand your story. You can include quotes from people who are considered authorities on your chosen story. For example, if you are writing about a murder, you would want to get statements coming from the police and witnesses. These can make your articles sound stronger and more catchy.

5. Include additional information. This is optional. If you are writing about a one-time event, you don't need to include additional information. However, if there were related stories written in the past, you will need to give your readers some background information.

Illegal Immigration to Canada

Illegal immigrants are people who are not legally permitted to live in a country. Every year, hundreds and thousands of people attempt to enter Canada illegally from Hungary, Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Panama, Central America, Eastern Europe, Ireland and other countries. Both the United States and Canada face serious illegal immigration problems. Failed refugee claimants and people with expired visas are illegal immigrants. It is believed that about 8% of foreigners attempt to enter Canada illegally. Another 64,000 people (8%) have expired visas. Some people enter the country as undocumented persons because of economic reasons.

As per an immigration report in 2003, the estimated number of undocumented people living in Canada is somewhere between 100,000 to 200,000. A few illegal immigrants exhaust all avenues of becoming legal and continue to live, work and contribute to Canada's economy for long. Increased security protection in United States following September 11, 2001 has also resulted in an increase in the number of illegal immigrants to Canada.

Illegal immigration to Canada can be reduced by verifying social insurance numbers. In Canada, a social insurance number beginning with the number nine shows that the person holding it is not a citizen. The expiration date must be verified to make sure that the number is still valid. Human Resources and Skills Development Canada can support problems in this region.

When compared to United States, illegal immigration to Canada is less. One can enter Canada either illegally, or as a refugee, citizen, or permanent immigrant. Entering illegally should not be necessary in Canada, because the country has the most liberal immigration and refugee entry laws in the world.

For political reasons, the Canadian government took the initiative to legalize undocumented people by granting amnesty. Illegal immigrants in Canada are granted permanent immigrant status during these amnesties. People who commit serious crimes are unlikely to get amnesty.

News on Michael Jackson's Nose

According to a document, Michael Jackson wore a prosthetic nose. The prosthetic nose was noted as missing from his face as the body lay in a morgue located in Los Angeles, California.

A small, dark hole surrounded by bits of cartilage was left behind according to eye witness accounts who saw the body of the King of Pop while it lay on the autopsy table. The prosthetic nose was worn by Michael Jackson because he was very shy about his appearance, masking the effects of an abundance of plastic surgeries.

Several claim Michael Jackson went through way too many nose-job sessions, & the public might be right according to many plastic surgeons. The nose appears to have collapsed considerably more than it ever should have over time, although it is said to be consistent with the wearing of surgical masks in recent times.

Plenty of plastic surgeons say it is dangerous to go back & do work on Michael Jackson's nose, & that they would be hard pressed to find a plastic surgeon for the next round.

It's been noted by many surgeons that with each nose job a person goes through, the blood circulation to the area decreases & the risks of infection & scarring increase. It was widely believed that he had finally accepted his nose for the way it was, considering each surgery increased risks it was probably in his best interest.

Most people who go through plastic surgery for nose jobs don't have the results looking like Michael Jackson, but it is estimated to have consisted of at least 5 jobs & there had to be some form of complications during each surgery.

Plastic surgeons who have studied photos say there may have been more like 30 or 40 surgeries performed.

When the entertainer was ordered to remove the surgical mask in a court room session, the appearance caused a stir & prompted several gasps from the audience & fans who were present that day.

The objective Michael Jackson had was to alter his flat, broad African-American nose in to more of a Caucasian nose. If credit was to be given to Michael for plastic surgery success, it was to serve as a warning for all of us--not to go far in plastic surgery!

The final surgery Michael Jackson had for his nose was done by a surgeon from Germany who agreed to repair the current nose. The surgery was done by taking part of the ear to place inside the nose, & the surgeon said it was fine after the operation but was close to collapsing after having twenty years of plastic surgery.

Newspaper Advertising How To Put Spin On An Old Medium

Sometimes the old tried and true method of advertising still works well, even in a society dependent on electronic communication. Such is the case of newspaper advertising. Newspaper advertising may be one of the oldest methods of advertising - but it's still surprisingly effective for many businesses.

Newspapers offer greater visibility than many advertising mediums. Most people read still read a newspaper, at least once a day. In a newspaper that has a good circulation, an ad is likely to be noticed by readers.

Newspaper advertising rates are dependent on a lot of factors. The cost of an ad may change based on the popularity of the publication, size of the ad, which section of the paper the ad appears in, how often you plan to run the ad, whether you need design help with the ad, etc.

With a newspaper ad, you take the chance that your ad will be overlooked by the reader. Readers tend to tune out small ads, and they may overlook an ad that simply appears in black and white. Typical black and white advertising in newspaper publications can be expensive, and may not have the same impact as a color ad. However, there is a way to continue to use the large circulation of a newspaper, and the color advertising of other mediums - simply by using newspaper inserts.

With a newspaper insert, you have a cost-effective method of advertising, you still take advantage of the newspaper circulation, and you have a method of advertising that has been tested to generate additional sales and help your company develop a brand image with customers.

A newspaper insert is basically a paper flyer that is inserted into newspapers. These inserts are often referred to as preprints, P & D, or Free Standing Insert (referred to as FSI). The advantage of an insert is that it offers more flexibility over a typical ad. For instance, with an insert, you can:

• Use high quality paper and attractive graphics to create a special insert.

• Add a "call to action" to your flier to capture the attention of the consumer.

• Insert contact information or special information about sales, promotions or special events.

• Produce an ad that stands apart from your competition.

Newspaper inserts are a cost effective method for producing advertising - in fact, it's much more cost effective than some of the other highly coveted methods of advertising - direct mail, radio or television commercials.

With newspaper inserts you can use an ad that is guaranteed to be delivered to the doorstep of thousands of potential clients. You have the ability to select exactly which homes receive the ad (based on postal codes or demographics) and you market you business in a way that yields great results. Newspaper advertising tends to establish credibility to companies and the repeat exposure gives customers a sense of trust with brand identity.

Compare the cost of direct advertising mailing to newspaper inserts - you will spend 4 to 5 times as much on direct mailing as newspaper inserts. There are even a number of internet companies that can prepare your newspaper insert and send it directly to your preferred newspaper for insertion. Companies like Wholesaleinserts.com can significantly cut the cost of your newspaper insert.

Newspaper advertising can be quite cost effective and bring new customers to your door. It all depends on how you select your advertising and how willing you are to get the most out of your newspaper investment.

Current Mortgage News

So what has been going on in the world of finance and mortgages? Certainly the biggest news was the fall of IndyMac. Last week we heard that IndyMac had stopped giving out new mortgage loans and was going to concentrate on simply servicing the existing loans in its portfolio. Apparently this was due to the fact that regulators felt that IndyMac was not adequately capitalized.

Many experts speculated that the days of IndyMac were numbered and might not last the year. They were right and not only did they not make it through the year they didn't even survive the rest of the week. On Friday it was announced that IndyMac was seized by US banking regulators. This was preceded by a rush on the bank by panicked depositors. The insurance fund currently has around 53 billion so the failure of IndyMac should be a significant drain of the insurance fund. The failure of the bank should cost the government insurance fund between 4 to 8 billion.

Moving on what is going on with mortgage rates this month. After rates rose through the month of June rates have fallen off in the first 2 weeks of July. This is good news because the rates feel in spite of the FED choosing not to lower rates at their last meeting. Rates on all the major mortgage products (30 Year, 15 Year, 5 Year and 1 Year) from the week of June 26 to July 3. Then rates for the most part held steady from July 3rd to July 10th. Rates fell the most on 5 Year Arms.

Its interesting to note that the spread between 5 Year Arms and 30 Year fixed notes has increased over the last month making 5 Year Arms more attractive. Below are the rates for the major mortgage products for the last few weeks.

July 10,2008
30-yr 6.37 15-yr 5.91 5-yr ARM 5.82 1-yr ARM 5.17

July 3,2008
30-yr 6.35 15-yr 5.92 5-yr ARM 5.78 1-yr ARM 5.17

June 26,2008
30-yr 6.45 15-yr 6.04 5-yr ARM 5.99 1-yr ARM 5.27

June 19,2008
30-yr 6.42 15-yr 6.02 5-yr ARM 5.89 1-yr ARM 5.19

June 12,2008
30-yr 6.32 15-yr 5.93 5-yr ARM 5.70 1-yr ARM 5.09

June 5,2008
30-yr 6.09 15-yr 5.65 5-yr ARM 5.51 1-yr ARM 5.06

Moving on lets look at mortgage payments. I like to translate mortgage interest rates into how they would affect a mortgage payment because at the end of the day that is what we are dealing with. So breaking out our free mortgage calculator lets see what these rates mean for a mortgage on a 200k house.

July 10th
30-yr $1247.08
15-yr $1678
5-yr ARM $1176.05
1-yr ARM $1094.51

July 3rd
30-yr $1244.47
15-yr $1679.08
5-yr ARM $1170.96
1-yr ARM $1094.51

June 5th
30-yr $1210.69
15-yr $1650.11
5-yr ARM $1136.83
1-yr ARM $1080.98

So what do we see happening over the next few months. At the beginning of the summer we felt rates would rise because the FED decided to stop cutting rates. Rates rose for a month and then recently have held steady and then felt a bit. Moving forward I don't have a clear idea what will happen with rates. I would have thought rates might fallen but with the fall of IndyMac the mortgage industry does not seem to be stabilizing so its uncertain what will happen with rates over the next month.

Journalism 100 - News Article Writing Crash Course

Writing a news article is a bit different than maybe an English essay. Whether you're a newbie to news scene, or the rusty old journalism major, here is a good crash course in news writing.

First of all, a news article always begins with a lead. A lead is the first sentence, and tells the entire story in 25 words or less. A lead answers: who, what, when, where, why and how. Not all questions are applicable to every story, so not every lead will answer all of them.

Once you have a lead, write the rest in inverted pyramid. News articles are written like an upside down triangle. The most important details are first, trickling down to the least important by the end.

Inverted pyramid serves two purposes. First, readers are pressed for time. They may have to walk away at any second. By giving the most important details first, they will still have gotten the story even if they can't finish your article. Secondly, in the land of publishing, advertising is king. If an advertiser wants more space, layout designers don't have time to rewrite your article to make the ad fit. Instead, articles are written so the last few lines can be cut and not kill your piece.

Tips:
Remember: K.I.S.S = Keep it Simple Stupid. News articles are written at an eighth grade level. Don't use a big word when a small one will do.

1. Study news articles. Websites like MSN, AOL, and Yahoo have great feature articles. Read them regularly.

2. Pay attention to the way they are structured and try mimic their rhythm and tone.

3. Write tight. This means, be concise. Feature stories allow more creativity, but mainly, journalism is about space. Say as much as possible, in as little space as possible. Don't use two words when one will do.

4. Get an AP Style Manual. News articles are written in AP Style. A style manual will answer any technical questions you may have.

Look a woman is not going to run up to you and tell you that she likes you. Neither are you going to run over to her and spill your guts. The reality is we all fear rejection, the thought that you really like someone and they may not like you is horrid.

There is no doubt that men can be somewhat more obvious when they like a girl, you know we got a lot of stuff to hide which can pop up at the most awkward of times. That said guys just tend to be more obvious.

Women are not as forthright. They tend to play their cards close to their chest. Along with this women can make things a little confusing for a guy at times. The good news is that there are ways that you can cut through the crap.

If a woman asks you direct personal questions, then she is interested in you. I was with a girl recently and my phone started to ring and she asked me if that was my girlfriend. This was an indirect way for her to find out if I was single.

Girls do not want to know you are single unless they want to figure out if you are available for them.

When if you are talking with a girl she sits up and pays attention to what you are saying and engages in the conversation then she is interested. When people are interested they immediately sit up or get close to make sure they know what is being said or to see what is going on.

If she hangs around and try's to keep the conversation going even when it is beginning to slide then you can rest assured that she wants to stay in your company.

To conclude girls can be subtle in how they show their interest, but if you miss these subtle signs then I have bad news for you, you will have just wasted an opportunity to be with that girl.

Booming: Television News Channels in India

News programmes have suddenly become hot property and are vying for attention with other popular programmes telecast in different channels. All major television broadcasters are including at least one news channel to their bouquet. The biggest headache for launching a satellite channel is programme software for round the clock. In this juncture, newsgathering is a major task for the 24-hour news channels. To cater this task, the emerging electronic channels have always made an attempt to cover all the incidents irrespective of position, location and time. These channels not only revolutionized the concept of news on Indian television but also changed the news formats. Before 1990s, Doordarshan had monopolized newscast on Indian television and also turned the news programs into a dowdy exercise. Now the private channels made the news an essential commodity like food, cloth and shelter. The strong point of all today’s news bulletins is their topicality, objectivity, glossy editing and high-quality visuals. News has traveled a long way from the DD era. From Local events to International events, breaking news to news analysis, television soap to page3 news, every happening comes under purview of news. In this article, we have covered some significant changes in news broadcasting in India before and after the Gulf War.

Indian Television - Flash Back

Television in India is undergoing significant changes in the current liberalized environment. To understand these changes, one needs to have some brief idea of the road covered by the television channels so far. The journey started as an experimental basis with a financial grant from UNESCO in 15th September 1959. The makeshift studio at Akashvani Bhavan in New Delhi was chosen for location of the experiment. The experiment started with one-hour program, broadcast twice a week, on community health, citizen rights, education and traffic sense etc. As far as news is concerned, it was launched exactly six years after the inception of television broadcasting. Daily one-hour program with a news bulletin was served to the Indian viewers. But one major drawback of television was that you could not enjoy the original colour of the objects because of black and white transmission. First multi-color programme was the Prime Minister’s address to the nation from Red Fort in Delhi on India’s 35th Independence Day. In the same day, DD National channel was launched. The aim of launching the National channel is nurturing national integration, and inculcating a sense of pride in Indians. Indian viewers also enjoyed the colored version of the Asian Games hosted by New Delhi in their drawing room. The coverage of major events and different occasions lend a big hand behind the infiltration of television signals to the nook and corners of the subcontinent. Indian Government had taken all possible steps to expand the television broadcasting demographically and geographically. In 1983 television signals were available to just 28% of the population, this had doubled by the end of 1985 and by 1990 over 90% of the population had access to television signals. In 1984, DD Metro channel was added to provide an exclusive entertainment for the urban viewers. In the beginning, this channel was confined to metropolitan cities.
As a public broadcaster, Doordarshan presented the news in naturalized manner. All controversial issues were pushed under the carpet. The ruling government had a strong hold on the television broadcasting. Doordarshan news bulletins were unable to provide the international news to the national viewers. Objectivity had been the first casualty as news was invariably slanted to suit the party in power. The news was liberated from the confines of the DD newsroom and gained in objectivity and credibility when New Delhi Television (NDTV) produced ‘The World This Week’ in 1988. Everyone was waiting for the Friday night to watch ‘The World This Week’. This was the only India-based programme, which looked out at the rest of the world. The World This Week was the best current affairs programme on the international scenario and carried good stuff of news, which the regular DD news was failed to carry out. This program is ranked as one of the country’s finest and most popular television shows. In 1989, NDTV produces India’s first live televised coverage of the country’s general elections. The critical and commercial success of the coverage sets a new standard for Indian television. After the Gulf War the media panorama has changed forever.

Golf War – The Catalyst

Post-1990 satellite television in India has become transnational in nature. It coincided with the entry of multinational companies in the Indian markets under the Government policy of privatization. International satellite television was introduced in India by CNN through its coverage of the Gulf War in 1991. In August 1991, Richard Li launched Star Plus, the first satellite channel beamed the signal to Indian subcontinent. Subhash Chandra’s Zee TV appeared in October 1992. It is India’s first privately owned Hindi channel to cater the interest of Indian viewers. This ignition followed by Sony and a little later by domestic channels such as Eenadu, Asianet and Sun TV. Entertainment programs had begun to occupy center stage in the organization’s programming strategies and advertising had come to be main source of funding. Doordarshan’s earlier mandate to aid in the process of social and economic development had clearly been diluted. Doordarshan had faced a stiff competition in news and public affairs programming with international channels like BBC and CNN. Doordarshan planned to sell some slots for news programme under sponsored category. In February 1995, NDTV becomes the country’s first private producer of the national newsNews Tonight’, which aired on the country’s government-owned Doordarshan set a new landmark for Indian television because of its on-the-spot reporting with pertinent visuals. In the same year, TV Today Network occupied a 20 minutes slot in DD Metro channel and aired a Hindi and current affairs programme ‘Aaj Tak’. This programme became popular for its comprehensive coverage and unique style presentation by Late S. P. Singh. Still we remembered the sign-up message “Ye Thi Khabar Aaj Tak, Intizar. Kijiye Kal Tak”. Large number of viewers across India had been watching Aaj Tak as a daily habit because of its innovative style of news presentation. Besides that Nalini Singh’s five-minute fast paced, condensed daily news capsule Ankhon Dekhi, TV Today Network’s Business Aaj Tak and Newstrack was aired on the Metro channel of Doordarshan. This is the period when satellite channels concentrated on entertainment programmes for their respective channels. Doordarshan was still ruled the most wanted area ‘news’.

Major Players

Doordarshan’s monopoly was broken in 1992, when private television channels infiltrated into the Indian boundaries and entertain the viewers as much as possible. In the beginning of 1990s, the private channels offered only entertainment programmes. The entertainment programs include family drama, comedy serials, children programmes, cartoons, movies, talk shows, recipe shows, musical concerts, non-fiction programmes etc. Private entertainment channels added some infortainment programmes to their Fixed Point Charts (FPC). Keeping the demand of infotainment programmes in mind, the media houses started to produce news magazines, entertainment magazines and news programmes for different channels. India’s premier business and consumer news broadcaster and a leading media content provider, Television Eighteen India Limited (TV18) started India’s first ever entertainment magazine ‘The India Show’ on Star Plus in 1993. This emerging media powerhouse provided prime time television content to almost all leading satellite channels in India including BBC, Star Plus, Sony Entertainment Television, Zee, MTV and Discovery. After The India Show, TV18 produced a weekly business news program India Business Report for BBC World. Indian viewers had very limited options (like public service broadcaster Doordarshan, BBC and CNN) for watching the television news. For televised news, the viewers had to watch Dordarshan and some international news channels like BBC or CNN. In this race to provide more news, more information, Zee Television jumped into the battlefield by launching the news channel Zee News in 1995. This News and current affairs channel revolutionized the way news was delivered to the viewers. Since its inception Zee News has endeavoured to be the fastest to provide news, working towards a single goal of Sabse Pahle (Always First). The other round-the-clock news channel, the Murdoch-owned Star TV beamed its exclusively 24-hour news channels, Star News in 1998. Star made a contract of five year with Prannoy Roy-owned NDTV (New Delhi Television Company) to provide news content for this news channel.
The untiring exhaustive coverage of the Kargil war between India and Pakistan gained more publicity and attracted more viewers towards the electronic channel. This televised conflict also sets a news benchmark for wartime journalism. During the Kargil war, common citizens witnessed how their brave Jawans fought despite in hostile conditions and watched the war front live by the exclusively news channels, Star-TV and Zee-News. The live coverage of the battlefield helped to create a euphoria of patriotism among the Indian masses, which later facilitated into collecting huge funds for the welfare of the families of Kargil martyrs. Every news programme draws the attention of large number of viewers but Kargil war attracts private broadcasters to invest more money in the broadcasting business by launching a news channel. In November 1999, TV18 entered into a 49:51 joint venture with CNBC Asia to launch CNBC India. TV18 is the sole program provider to CNBC India, and produces 12 hours of local content per day on this 24-hour satellite channel.
After the huge success of news programme ‘Aaj Tak’, TV Today group launched a 24-hour Hindi news channel with the same name ‘Aaj Tak’, in December 2000, which covers India with insight, courage and plenty of local flavour. Within 11 months of its launch, Aaj Tak emerged as India’s number one news channel and was awarded Best News Channel award from Indian Television Academy Awards. Some mega events apart from regular interesting items (such as Kandhahar hijack, September 11 attacks, Afghanistan war, attack on Parliament, Iraq war, Godhra carnage and riots) have driven up the viewership. As time passed, NDTV’s five years contract with Star group for outsourcing of news and related programming expired on March 2003. With the expiry NDTV forayed into broadcasting business by simultaneously launching two 24-hour news channels; NDTV 24X7 – English news channel and NDTV India – Hindi news channel, which targets the Indian diaspora across the world. News crazy Indians received more news at faster speed from different channels. Any unusual happening can be caught by the television camera anywhere form Rastrapati Bhawan to bedroom. The power of TV journalism was become more visible by the major sting operations like Operation West End and Shakti Kapoor Case. This style of investigative journalism has brought about a change in the way we look at news, amidst new notions of editorial freedom. The world’s largest family ‘Sahara India Parivar’ launched a 24-hour national Hindi news channel, Sahara Samay, in March 28, 2003. It is the first ever city-centric satellite news channels covering 31 cities in India with their own city news bulletins. Keeping the demand of news in mind, the Union cabinet approved the proposal to convert the DD Metro to DD news in a meeting held on 3 October 2003. Consequent to these decisions, DD-News channel was launched on 3 November 2003. You might have noticed that the news channels are language specific. But DD’s news channel contains the round the clock news bulletins in Hindi/ English are also telecast twice a day on the National Network of DD National.
‘Aap Ki Adalat’ fame Rajat Sharma, Sohaib Ilyasi, the man behind the highly successful ‘India's Most Wanted’ and Taun Tejpal, editor-in-chief of Tehelka roped together and launched a free-to-air Hindi news and current affairs channel India TV on May 20, 2004. Indian viewers had more expectations from this channel. The much-awaited news channel hopes to set itself apart from the existing ones by setting new benchmarks of responsible journalism. Speaking on the occasion of the launch, Rajat Sharma, chairman, India TV, said, “We aim to change the way broadcast news reporting is being conducted in the country. India TV will set new benchmarks by maintaining international standards of responsible and credible news reporting. We will stay away from graphic depictions of violence and sensationalism of news. We will uphold the viewer's right to correct information and their right to truth and verity. India TV is not just a news channel, it is a movement.” NDTV as a pioneer in Indian television news, set to create a fresh revolution in high-quality business news with the launch of NDTV Profit. NDTV launched this 24-hour business channel on January 17th, 2005.
There is no saturation point in launching of news channel, just booming like sky as the limit. Entertainment channel to infotainment channel, infotainment channel to news channel, news channels to business channel and Business channel to lots more. Now the satellite channels become more topicality with international standard. When we are talking about topicality, CNBC TV18, the only business channel, continues to be the medium of choice for India’s decision makers, affluent audiences across the country since 1999. It has set the pace for the growth in number of television channels by launching a 24-hour consumer channel in Hindi called ‘ Awaaz’. This news channel focusses on empowering consumers on decision-making related to investment, saving and spending. All the programmes are catering to consumers across different walks of life, which included personal finance; variety of markets including commodity, stocks, savings etc.; small businesses; education & career guidance; and verticals like health, shopping etc.
Another news channel was finally launched into the already cluttered news space in Indian television. Jagran TV Pvt Limited's news channel, Channel 7 up-linked to the air on 27 March 2005. The channel has been set up to cater to the vast Hindi-speaking audiences, already being targeted by a slew of news channels. Channel 7 developed every programme with a bid to cater to all types of audiences and not just pre-dominantly male audiences who get attracted towards news channels.

Regional Leaders

To cater the interest among the Indians, Doordarshan televises programmes in Hindi and associate Official languages. It has launched a number of Regional Language Satellite Channels (DD - 4 to DD - 11 and DD - 13) and telecast programmes in Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Kashmiri, Oriya and Tamil. The Regional channels relayed by all terrestrial transmitters in the state and additional programmes in the Regional Language in prime time and non-prime time available only through cable operators. The Doordarshan regional satellite channels telecast major news programme with some entertainment programmes.
If you think about the private regional channels, they have followed the path of the Big brother (i.e Doordarshan). They are neither completely entertainment channel nor exclusively news channel. They are following the middle path and claiming themselves an infotainment channels. The private channels televise through the state dominant languages. Rising advertising revenues and increasing numbers of viewers have provided the impetus for many big players to enter into the business. Some regional media leaders like ETV, Sun TV, Asianet have a strong grip over the regional market. Some major players tried their luck in different states. Zee television has three regional channels; Zee Marathi, Zee Punjabi and Zee Bangla. Star Network entered into Tamilnadu by launching Star Vijay, one of the most popular entertainment channels in India broadcasting in Tamil. Besides that ETV Network is a part of the well-established Ramoji Group, has created 12 dedicated infotainment regional channels. ETV network is the source of rich entertainment of eight different languages. Those are: Telugu, Bangla, Marathi, Kannada, Oriya, Gujarati, Urdu; and Hindi to viewers in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. Every ETV Network channel focuses exclusively on its audience’s unique cultural identity, its aspirations and its distinct socio-political character. Let us think about the south Indian language Telugu, there are around twelve satellite channels are roaming around the sky with different taste and different flavour. These channels include three news channels, one song-based channels and rest are infotainment channels. When we confine ourselves into news, three channels (ETV2, TV 9 and Teja News) exclusively devoted to news programmes.
Sahara India Pariwar is proud to have five news channels as the bouquet of Sahara Samay. These channels are: Sahara Samay NCR, Sahara Samay Mumbai, Sahara Samay Bihar & Jharkhand, Sahara Samay Madhya Pradesh & Chattisgarh, and Sahara Samay Uttar Pradesh & Uttranchal. Sahara Samay has already managed to gain a loyal audience in India through a bouquet of National & Regional News Channels since its launch. These channels are youthful and vibrant channels targeting students and women, besides that hardcore news stuff. The regional news channels covers the entire spectrum of genre with specific programs on lifestyle, fashion, food, shopping, health and fitness, sports, education, career and city issues, besides giving user-friendly information on traffic updates, city events, train and air timings, etc. Now national news channels cannot confine its boundary to national level. They cannot ignore the regional news because of the stiff competition form the regional cannels. Regional news channels are entering into the competition with a strong will power and also with an aim to portrait regional issues in national and international level.

Conclusion

Now the television industry becomes more specific. In this competitive market, channels are targeting specific viewers. News channels attract more viewers beyond their target by producing interactive and interesting programmes. Every channel needs to do an extensive research on different concepts and different themes to attract more viewers and in the same time more advertisers. After all, advertisements are the bread and butter for the channels. With increased consumer preference for news programmes, television news channels have grown faster than other niche channels. News channels are booming just like sky as the limit. Those days are not far away, when we will get satellite news channel for every major city in India. Staying in abroad, we can update ourselves about all the happening of our hometown. Now news is not restricted to political happenings. It will be extended its limit to every unwanted and hided corners of the society. At last we can reach in the conclusion that anything, which is strange or disgusting, is news. There are no rigid rules, which defines news.

Tough Talk: Bad News Delivered the Right Way

Communicating Bad News The Right Way

It’s the rare executive who actually enjoys speaking before groups of people, even under the best of circumstances. Public speaking routinely ranks highest
on people’s list of fears. Add the pressure of having to deliver bad news to good people,
and even the most confident executive can stumble.

Every employee has a horror story about a manager’s inability to relate bad news. One new manager tried to quell questions from anxious employees about their jobs by denying the obvious: he’d been hired to make changes. When that statement was met with skepticism, he explained, “What I meant was that I’m not going to make any changes that you don’t already know have to be made.” Not surprisingly, his words did little to stem fear, help employee morale, or change the speed with which resumes were readied, even among those spared the ax.

Another executive withheld information about necessary layoffs right up to and including the time those layoffs were being put into effect. As employees were summoned one by one into the executive’s office, word began to spread through the employee grapevine like wildfire. Rumors flew out of control. One fired employee began calling workers who were not present, with erroneous news they too were about to be fired. So badly had the executive handled the situation, security guards had to be called in to handle growing employee anger and frustration, right in the presence of visiting clients.

To be sure, these are extreme, real-life examples of bad news communicated badly. However, even the announcement of difficult changes can be handled well by executives, if those announcements are handled honestly, appropriately, and with open and clear communication.

It makes no sense for executives whose workplaces are filled with rumor to stay silent. Yet many executives do just that, fearing that anything they say will only add to the anxiety. The first rule of communicating about change in the workplace is the same rule used in crisis communications: tell what you know when you know it.

Even if what you do know, or are allowed to say is limited, you will do yourself and your employees a great deal of good by setting the stage for open communication early. This gives executives an opportunity to learn of employee concerns and to squelch unfounded rumors at the outset. Even more importantly, it allows executives to communicate an understanding of those concerns to employees.

That will go a long way in giving both employees who are impacted, and those who are not, more confidence that their interests are being taken into account.

Executives should also use care and attention with the words and tone they use, along with how those words are likely to be perceived. Executives uncomfortable with the emotions involved in delivering unpleasant news often choose to present a simple recitation of the facts, in a neutral tone. While it’s important to let employees know what is happening, and why, its equally important executives acknowledge the real pain those changes are causing. Don’t assume workers know how you feel. Workers need to hear executives empathize about the impact of difficult decisions, and acknowledge their worth and contributions.

Executives need to find as many ways as possible to help ease the blow of bad news for all employees, those who might be downsized or reassigned, as well as those left behind. Communicating about any and all options available for employees helps ease the feelings of helplessness and frustration, among those most impacted by change. For those left behind, honest communication about new job duties or increased responsibilities will go a long way toward rebuilding morale and confidence.

Bad news doesn’t have to be communicated badly. Honest, clear and powerful communication can help pave the way for a new beginning.

All The News That Fits - In 500 Words Or A Graphic

The editors of USA Today, as they do every day, had to decide what to make its "Cover Story."

The death toll from the cyclone in Myanmar was approaching 25,000, with about almost a million homeless, and the ruling military junta was still refusing to accept foreign assistance.

A Pentagon report revealed that about 43,000 medically unfit troops were sent into combat.

In Philadelphia, six police officers were under investigation for beating suspects. And, in Russia a new president was inaugurated.

What the editors chose to dominate the front page was a three-column head photo of presidential daughter Jenna Bush and a story about her forthcoming non-public private wedding. The only reason USA Today didn't run the story on its front pages Saturday and Sunday is because it doesn't publish on weekends. But, just about every other news medium gave the wedding heavy play.

When USA Today debuted in 1982, it was a glitzy full color alternative to the average gray newspaper. Focused upon an audience of travelers, and primarily available at airports and hotels, the five day a week newspaper, then as now, had short, quick looks at the news. "Across the USA" is a series of one paragraph stories from every state, plus the territories, something to let the lonely traveler know his home state still exists. A color weather map informs travelers what to expect when they arrive at an airport a dozen states away. Extensive business stories target middle- and upper-management workers who don't have the time to read that day's Wall Street Journal.

With an emphasis on polls, USA Today tells us what we think. And what we think is divided into four equal parts-News, Lifestyle, Sports, and Money. Thus, news is one-fourth of the newspaper.

Ridiculed as McPaper, but read by about two million people a day, most of whom get their daily dose from vendor boxes that look like a TV on a stand, USA Today has set the agenda for almost every newspaper in the country. Following the USA Today model, local newspapers have splashed color and graphics on its pages. The stories are shorter, but not necessarily tighter. And, in an era of downsizing, in which publishers who don't pull in 20 percent a year profits are often reassigned, there are fewer reporters, fewer in-depth stories, fewer and narrower pages, and a greater reliance upon wire service stories. But, celebrity-based stories and increased fluff-what editors wrongly believe the readers want-have taken over the front pages.

USA Today was never designed to replace the local newspaper, nor should it be a model for local newspapers. It has a niche, and serves that niche well. But, local newspapers have become USA Today clones. That's why if USA Today places a celebrity wedding as its most important issue of the day, then it's reasonable to believe that the clones also believe that 25,000 deaths can be relegated to the inside pages.

Newspaper Wedding Announcements

There is an old saying that a lady should be in the newspaper only three times in her life: when she is born, when she is married, and when she dies. You may not have too much control over the first and last of those, but it can be nice to put your wedding announcement in the paper. There is a certain protocol for how this should be done.

Some couples will put an engagement announcement in their local newspaper. This is usually a black and white photo of the couple which has been professionally taken in some sort of scenic location. It is not the time to submit a snapshot taken on the fly, because these pictures will be seen by thousands, and you want to look your best. Wear something that will look good in black and white. The trick is to look polished without looking like you tried too hard. For instance, wearing all of your bridal jewelry in the picture would be too much, but a simple strand of pearls could add the right finishing touch to a classic outfit (think Brooks Brothers). Before taking the picture, be sure that the groom has a fresh haircut and no 5 o'clock shadow (it will look awful in the grainy newspaper image).

Many more couples will decide to skip the engagement announcement and wait to do a wedding announcement. These typically show the couple on their wedding day, dressed in all of their finest. This is the time for the bride to be fully decked out in her gown, veil, and bridal jewelry (some people do take these picture before the wedding, depending on the newspaper's deadlines). Even people who do not know you will be looking at your picture, because many people read the wedding announcements in the paper just for fun.

Some brides will post an announcement in the city where they presently live, others will do it in their hometown, and others will put an announcement in both. If you have been a resident in your current city for only a brief time, it might make more sense to announce your marriage only in your hometown paper, where all of your old friends and relations can see it. However, if you have no remaining ties to your hometown, it would make sense to skip that publication.

Along with the photograph, most newspapers will include some biographical information on the newlyweds. Expect to be asked about where you attended high school and college, as well as about your current employment. The announcements will also include information about when and where the wedding took place. Many will also mention the honeymoon destination. In the old days, the wedding announcements tended to go into greater detail about the wedding, describing the bride's attire, and naming all of the members of the bridal party, but many newspapers no longer allot that much space for each announcement.

For many newspapers, all you have to do is submit your information and your announcement will be published, but this is not the case for New York brides. The ultimate wedding announcement forum is the New York Times Sunday Style section. Not only do you have to provide extensive background information on the newlyweds and their parents, but there are very particular requirements about photographic submissions as well. The funniest one is that the couples should only send in photos where the eyebrows of both people are "on exactly the same level". (I am not making this up!) The Times states up front that not all submissions will be published, and there is definitely a pecking order involved. Many a bride has wondered what she can do to get her wedding photo into the New York Times (above the fold even!), and the best advice is usually to be a Rockefeller or a Vanderbilt, marry a member of Congress, or become one yourself.

Wedding announcements are a good way to spread the word about your happy news. It is fun for your family and friends to read your announcement in the newspaper. They also make a wonderful keepsake for your wedding album.
